On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the Data Protection Act. While the GDPR is a European Regulation, the UK Government has confirmed that the UK’s exit from the EU will not affect the commencement of the GDPR.

While further detail is awaited, the Information Commissioner’s Office has recently updated its helpful guidance for those wanting to start planning for the changes. Its 12-step guide is a very useful starting point. It confirms that those who currently comply with the Data Protection Act will have a valid starting point under the GDPR, but that there will still be more to do.

The ICO’s 12-step guidance can be accessed here.

We will, in due course, be providing more information on the GDPR through further articles and seminars.

In the meantime, if you would like assistance to ensure you are compliant with the current data protection laws or if you have any queries regarding the above, then please contact your dedicated Employment Solicitor or another member of the Employment team.
